Free Beer
Denmark, 2007Superflex (DK)
Typedesign and artwork for the open-source product FREE BEER by artist group Superflex.
FREE BEER refers to information freedom, not economic freedom. Originally conceived by Superflex and students at the Copenhagen IT University FREEBEER applies the model of free software / open source methods upon a real world project. In the spirit of the open source model the recipe is completely in the public domain and available to any person. Anyone is free to earn money from FREEBEER and all design and branding are also available. Designing a visual program for an idea which reflects upon open source and information freedom can not be a solution with rigid design guidelines. Other models of interpretation had to be exercised. The resulting solution builds on a vivid and colourful reference to 60's liberation. Practically speaking this means "free the colours". No one color has the ability to rule or over set another. Only one spectral rule governs: NEVER USE ONE COLOR TWICE. A true anti model applicable to all products and scenes connected with the project – from beer label, posters, advertising, spacial presentations etc.
