Exhibition design for 'Afgang 2010' (Departure 2010).

Afgang was the title the annual graduation show for The Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts’ Schools of Visual Arts in 2010. Traditionally the exhibition has always been known as Udgang (Exit), but the title had already been used by an earlier exhibition in the same the year, so it was renamed Afgang.

Elements to design for the exhibition were a poster, catalogue, invitation and signage. The catalogue formed the centre of the design program. The catalogues content, aside from a text based introduction and index was governed by the students themselves, each page serving as a space for their expression. Our work was simply to provide a subtle framework for that content. As a further visual element of the exhibition we re-employed the use of the Academy's classical seal. Alongside all the graduates anarchy it would seem natural to drop this classical symbol, but on other hand it seemed appropriate to signal a respect for heritage.

The material for the catalogue came from a mixed stock of old un-used paper at the printers. The catalogues are a random selection of these different papers with no two copies the same. The cover paper stock is consistent throughout.

Kunsthal Charlottenborg

Copenhagen's largest exhibition venue (1,400 m2 of exhibition space) and meeting-place for contemporary art. The exhibitions are internationally oriented, and are promoted widely among art enthusiasts of all ages.

The historic building, built in 1883, which is shared with Danmarks Kunstbibliotek (the Danish National Art Library) was originally called the Exhibition Building at Charlottenborg, to emphasise its affiliation with Charlottenborg itself, the baroque palace on Kongens Nytorv which now houses the pictorial art schools of the Royal Danish Academy of Art.

Kunsthal Charlottenborg is a state institution, and is part of the Ministry of Culture.
